Connect to a Windows based PC

The process of adding your certificate to a Windows PC is simple. For this you should have already installed the OpenVPN GUI for windows. If you haven’t done this yet please download the software and install it on the Windows pc you want to connect to your VPN. We have provided the links for the gui client based on Window Vista or later below.

Windows x32 bit OpenVPN GUI
Windows x64 bit OpenVPN GUI

For other versions of windows visit here > https://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/downloads.html

Once installed all you need to do is unzip the contents the zip file you have taken from the server. It’s named opvn-USERNAME.zip. Place the contents in their own folder on your desktop for ease.

Next find out where OpenVPN is installed on your computer and navigate to the config file. It’s usually;

C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config

All you need to do now is copy and paste the files from your zip file into the config file. Make sure you copy them all into this folder.
Now you’re ready to connect to your vpn. Start the program by double clicking the icon on your desktop. In the notification bar at the bottom right you will see the grey gui icon. Right click this and click connect.

The program will now connect to your VPN, pass your certificate for the server to check and if it’s all ok it will ask you for a password. Enter the password for the user you created and click connect.

NOTE: Some versions of our vpn installer do not ask for a password when connecting. This is still secure because the certificate to connect is stored on your pc at the above location

This gui icon will turn yellow to show it’s connecting and then green to show it’s connected.

You can now check to make sure your IP is the same as your VPN IP. You can use the free service at Free Webmaster Tools to do this > Check Your Current IP Address.

Adding additional users to your vpn

Adding additional users to your vpn

If you have just signed up for a vpn then there is a few more steps you need to complete to connect your vpn to your device. In this guide we’re going to show you how to connect a windows based pc to your dedicated vpn server. We cannot complete this for you. For your security we have no access to your server and your encryption keys.
To complete this and add more users to your vpn so they can also connect you will need to download some software. You will need;

  1. Putty. Used to login to your server. Download here
  2. WinSCP. Used to download your certificate. Download here

NOTE: These are for Windows based machines. You can get other versions by visiting the publishers site.

Once you have downloaded these programs and installed them open putty and enter the details of your server. These are provided in your welcome email which was sent to you when we delivered your vpn server. Enter the IP of your server in the hostname box, and the port of your server which will be 22. Click open.

NOTE: Click yes on the security alert box that pops up.
NOTE 2: You can copy and paste into a console by copying the required text then right clicking inside the console you just opened.

Next you need to login. The login username is always root and the password is included in your welcome email. So for the username type root and press enter. Next enter the password exactly as it is seen in your welcome email. It’s case sensitive. Then press enter.
You should now see a screen like this below

Now, to add your Windows based device all you need to do is enter the following command and press enter

wget https://first2host.co.uk/servers/vpninstall.sh --no-check-certificate -O vpninstall.sh; chmod +x vpninstall.sh; ./vpninstall.sh

You will now see the VPN menu which allows you to add users, remove access for users and remove your vpn server totally. You should never need to use option three.

Let’s add the first user. You. From the open console press 1 and enter. You are now asked to enter a username. This can be anything you like. In this example we used testuser. Enter the username you want to use and press enter.

Press enter on the next screen which should be displaying a “y” if there’s no “y” listed here please enter one and press enter.

Now you’re asked to enter a password. Enter a password that you will remember. It can’t be a directory word and you will need to enter this each time you connect to your vpn. Enter the password now and press enter. You will be asked to enter it twice.

The server will now create a unique certificate and throw you back to the main menu. If you scroll up a little you will see the server has told you where the certificate is. You will now need to download this to your local pc. You can use WinSCP to do this.

WinSCP is much like putty but provides a more graphical user interface which is therefore easier to use. Assuming you have already downloaded these programs open up WinSCP and like putty enter your server IP in the new connection screen with the port 3000. In the username enter root and the password enter the password listed in your welcome email.

Next all you need to do is use the drop down box at the top and select the root folder where you will see the username of the certificate you just created. Drag this to the left where it will then be downloaded to your computer. Make note of where the certificate is. You will need this.

That’s the hard part of adding the vpn to your Windows device over. Now you have your certificate/key to connect to your vpn you can more onto adding this certificate to your device. Each device needs a separate certificate. So just repeat this process to add more certificates and users.
